Legacy is important, yes.

[.....]

It's not that they don't want to talk about it. They're just being prevented from remembering. By some oath they took, I think. [...] Pocket mentioned an oath, at least. [...] They'll tell you what they can, if you ask the right questions.

Mr. Crockett said he doesn't remember much of his youth. I showed him a yearbook I [...] took from Mr. Huang's office. Everything that has to do with Mr. Qualls and his son is crusted over with lichen, just like the records in the library. I told him that there was lichen in his brain and it was keeping him from remembering how Mr. Qualls died or anything about his son. [...] That didn't seem to surprise him. He said everything they gave up, they gave up willingly. [....] He asked me to leave Mr. Potkin and Mr. Youngblood alone. [....] I think they were very close with Mr. Qualls' son. The [...] oath, or whatever, is probably affecting them more than others.

Mr. Trullinger didn't say, exactly. He didn't seem entirely like himself. Obviously, he was struggling to remember. [...] He mentioned that they were fighting 'the thing the locals from Paw Paw called up.' I think that's what he said.

[.....]

Eaten up by plants, maybe? [...] I don't know what happened to Paw Paw.
