The decorations from yesterday's festival are down before students have even started stirring this morning, and the only sign that there had been a huge event the day before is the fact that there are still so many people on Peckenpaugh's campus for this game. It kind of makes sense, anyway, the current #1 team, Ilvermorny, pitted against the rising #3 team, Peckenpaugh — this is one of the biggest games in the season, a determiner for just who's going to make it into the playoffs, surely. Winter can't wait to be over, it's bright and sunny today, almost warm in the holler, and when Ilvermorny's Yeehawls arrive the lot of them are dressed like it's just about summer.

Peckenpaugh's Heads of House are all on hand to greet Ilvermorny's, as they usually are, but the moment students start exiting the buses, Mr. Berzelius diverts. "There she is!" he shouts in that loud parent-trying-to-embarrass-their-child kind of way, and charges the bus as a surly girl with a cloud of dark hair steps off. He tackles her — straight up tackles her — and scoops her up over his shoulder.

"Dad!" she complains.

"Hi Princess," he replies.

The stands are literally overflowing today, and spectators are made to sit on makeshift bleachers put up to the side of the elevated stands. A few folks, like Pro Quodpotter Ray Mayo, are on brooms, off the pitch, but up high enough to get a good look at the plays. Leap Day may be over, but that strange energy still clings to the holler, and when the marching band takes the field to play it's somehow the best show they've ever put on. Peckenpaugh's crowd stands when they applaud the performance. Next up it's the cheerleaders, and spectators seem equally thrilled when the gymnasts are coated in today's special quod filling: marshmallow fluff. Hm, might need some special potion to get that out of your hair.

Ilvermorny takes the field across from Peckenpaugh, C. Quackenbush staring down Danger for the first face off, and Danger has no clue how much danger he is potentially in. The first quod goes up and C. Quackenbush bats it down out of the air to Hatfield before crash-landing directly on Danger’s broom (and Danger himself). As C. Quackenbush and Danger hit the dirt, one of their fellow Sparrows takes control of the quod, and then takes the first out of the game. They’re followed quickly by McIntyre, a victim of good reflexes when he catches a hot quod, and W. Quackenbush, whose broom’s brakes hit some trouble at the worst possible time. She hits the pot, the pot hits back, and then the quod fills her hair with fluff.

Smith and Danger get Ilvermorny on the board with back-to-back dunks, but Abatangelo fails to follow in their footsteps and takes the bench. With Ilvermorny up 0 - 2, C. Quackenbush tries to keep it together long enough to get a shot in only to find the slipperiest quod in the bag. It slips out of their hands, bounces off the broom, and splatters them with fluff. Another Peckenpaugh Sparrow gets taken down next, and Chaudhri and Smith fall soon after, keeping the field just about even.

H. Quackenbush finally gets a hold of the quod and very carefully takes it to the scoring zone, tying the score at 2 - 2, and when Danger attempts another dunk he finds himself taking a highway to the bench soon enough. Yu keeps the dream alive with a three-pointer, and Baxter keeps everyone humble when he doesn’t even make it past midfield. Waxweiler gets shit back in control with an easy layup, and Peckenpaugh stays in the game at 4 - 5.

Hatfield tries to take the lead with a Signature No Thought Shot, but it mmmmmbackfires on her and she’s axed in the process. Jekyll takes the opposite approach, taking the quod straight to the source, and he banks another point for Ilvermorny, now 4 - 6. Peckenpaugh suffers two brutal losses in the subsequent rounds, Waxweiler and their other Captain taking the L. Ahn gets the quod next and, with the entirety of Ilvermorny’s remaining players headed his way, he lobs the quod toward the pot. It lands, and Peckenpaugh pulls into the lead at 7 - 6. Ahn’s victory doesn’t get a sequel; he’s the next to go down, and he’s tailed to the bench by Ilvermorny’s Spiker.

Riddick takes control of the next quod and takes it to the pot, tying the game once more, 7 - 7, and when one of Peckenpaugh’s two remaining Sparrows attempts a comeback they’re sent packing. Jekyll brings another two points Ilvermorny’s way, eking them back into the lead at 7 - 9. Peckenpaugh’s last Sparrow throws themselves at the next quod, hoping to bring the lead back to Peckenpaugh, but it blasts them out of the air before they get a chance, leaving just H. Quackenbush against four Ilvermorny players. But it’s not like this is his first time facing dire circumstances.

H. Quackenbush takes the next quod and jostles it up the pitch, biding his time until he’s ready to shoot—and as soon as he does, Jekyll springs into action, catching the quod before it can hit the pot and catching all the fluff as he does. Yu falls for the same trick moments later, the cooked quod falling right into their hands as fast as a cursed sophomore can throw them. With just two more to take down, H. Quackenbush gets a hot quod in his hands, and he has to get rid of it. He looks to Riddick and Seabrooke, raises his arm to shoot the quod… and it stays put.

Still stuck to his hand, the quod pops.

One month ago, Peckenpaugh’s Varsity team took down the undefeated Bottleby, bumping them from first in the nation to second in favor of Ilvermorny, and the whole town is buzzing in anticipation of a repeat performance on home turf. Captains Adrian Gildersleeves and Valkyrie Horvat shake hands with Ilvermorny Captains Nebuchadnezzar “Chad” Rothschild and Rico d’Amore and the starters take their places, the cheers from Peckenpaugh sounding particularly raucous as Peckenpaugh’s Zettler comes out to meet Ilvermorny’s Altizer-Berzelius.

00:00:00 - 00:05:05 : Zettler starts this game off right by nearly losing his balance in a dive for the quod, and he knocks it straight out of Altizer-Berzelius’ hands to Gildersleeves before shooting off up the pitch. Gildersleeves follows Zettler, Altizer-Berzelius and Du Pont hot on their tails as they streak down the field, but these Critters ain’t afraid of Ilvermorny’s allegedly legendary defense. Zettler is already lining up his shot before Gildersleeves drops the ball straight down to him, and Zettler makes the first goal of the game. (3 - 0)

00:05:06 - 00:13:34 : Rothschild takes the lead in the next round and rips the quod out of Samaniego’s hands, but it’s all eyes on Rasputin as she barrels straight toward Peckenpaugh’s defenders by the pot. She distracts the Critters just long enough for Rothschild to take his quod directly to the goal. (3 - 1)

Peckenpaugh ain’t about to make that same mistake twice. Vega and Samaniego double-team Rothschild in the follow-up, forcing him to pass so they can knock the quod to Duke and keep their momentum up. It’s a good thought, but Duke doesn’t have the luck to back it up. The quod gives her a face full of marshmallow fluff, and Duke is the first player to leave the field.

00:13:35 - 00:15:42 : Sorry Duke, but no one’s got time to mourn your loss. Rider gets that quod and tries to pass it right to Gildersleeves, but it bounces off his face instead. Zettler dives for the save, and casually blows the curls out of his face as he pops that quod right in the pot. (4 - 1)

00:15:43 - 00:16:28 : For the first time all season, Peckenpaugh has early control of the game and they’re determined to hold onto that shit. McGill tries to outmaneuver De Witt, but De Witt’s brute strength sends that quod straight through McGill to Gildersleeves goalside, who wastes exactly zero seconds slamming that quod down to the pot for another three points in Peckenpaugh’s bank. (7 - 1)

00:16:29 - 00:25:02 : And Altizer-Berzelius ain’t fucking having it. The Ilvermorny Sparrow is out for blood as she wrestles the quod away from Samaniego and slams through the crowd of defenders, outstripping even her own teammates as she rockets toward her goal. There’s only one man on the field who can stop her, and Zettler is on it, plastered to his broom as he tries to catch her, urging his broom to just get in front of her and— Altizer-Berzelius blows through Zettler like she doesn’t even see him, sending him spinning out downwards toward the ground.

In the audience, Mr. Berzelius shouts, “YOU’RE DOING GREAT SWEETIE!” as Altizer-Berzelius sinks an outside goal for Ilvermorny, bringing them up 7 - 4.

But then the whistle blows, and, assuming the Concussion King Zettler can stay on his broom, he’s given a penalty shot. Proving he’s not the least bit distracted by the blood dripping from his nose, or the long “boooooooooooos” from his Hermeticism teacher in the crowd, Zettler sinks his penalty shot and takes another point for Peckenpaugh. (8 - 4)

00:25:03 - 00:30:28 : There’s a manic energy on the pitch as the game ticks over the half hour mark, and Peckenpaugh is scrambling to keep Ilvermorny at bay. Horvat gets in a tight spot in the corner and her pass to Rider goes high, but Gildersleeves is there in a flash, knocking that quod straight out of the air. McGill darts in to intercept and gets a marshmallow bath in response. Clapsaddle gets to be the next target of Altizer-Berzelius’ murderous intent when she wrests the quod from her control, but she doesn’t get a chance; they both wind up in a sticky situation seconds later when Clapsaddle gets splattered.

Coen and Deverill tussle over the next quod, and De Witt fends off the feisty Altizer-Berzelius, but it’s Iglesias they should have kept an eye on. Ilvermorny’s lone Falcon comes in from below, shooting the gap between Coen and Deverill to nab that quod. From high above the field, Iglesias takes a wild outside shot and proves that Ilvermorny is more than just defense when it bounces off the rim and rolls right in. (8 - 7)

00:30:29 - 00:35:39 : Ito follows Iglesias’ victory with a flubbed shot, proving that Ilvermorny is also a lot more than offense. Samaniego edges Du Pont out for that rebound and swings up, pointing her broom toward the sky. But with a hot quod and her own pot over half a field away, Samaniego doesn’t have time to line up a good shot; she lobs that mess ball toward the floating cauldron miles away, and the Patron Saint of Foolish Sophomores does her a solid when it drops right in. (11 - 7)

00:35:40 - 00:39:45 : Altizer-Berzelius tries to commit an actual murder when Deverill grabs the quod, but Webberley saves her in the nick of time. He careens sideways into Altizer-Berzelius, slamming her out of the way and giving Deverill the second she needs to line up a three-point proof of life. Ito shows Altizer-Berzelius how you’re supposed to do it when the next quod comes out; she pops that quod up and out of Rider’s hands and slaps it down the pitch, where Highbrow nets an outside goal right back for Ilvermorny. (14 - 10)

00:39:46 - 00:44:15 : Coen gets into a sticky spot thanks to the daring duo De Witt and Deverill, and Sanchez is there on the double to lend a hand. Deverill can’t quite intercept that pass, but she slaps the quod hard enough that it’s not just Sanchez who winds up covered in sticky stuff moments later.

Deverill’s got a target on her back now and she can’t hold onto that quod once Du Pont starts throwing elbows. She rips that quod from Deverill’s sticky fingers and passes to Altizer-Berzelius, who does what she does best and leaves everyone in the dust. De Witt tries to keep up, but by the time he’s reached her she’s already taken her shot. Ilvermorny keeps the game interesting with another three points. (14 - 13)

00:44:16 - 00:47:56 : Gildersleeves and Vega can’t be caught, tearing ass down the pitch, banking past Rothschild and swinging around d’Amore, a truly unstoppable pair—until, of course, they’re not. That sneaky Iglesias rolls in from out of nowhere, and Vega and her quod turn into a big splat against her chest.

Iglesias is flying high after that and she snakes the next possession, but Zettler brings her crashing down when he steals it away and starts a game of hot quod-tato. Ito gets it back, De Witt intercepts a pass to Du Pont, smacking the quod out of the air. Coen reaches for it, bouncing the ball off the palm of her hand, trying desperately to keep it in play another second, but it’s on Coen when they all get caught in a volcano of fluff.

00:47:57 - 00:48:41 : Zettler’s nose is still bleeding and he probably shouldn’t be on the field, but he can also probably see through time because it’s nothing but net (pot) when he lets loose a perfect shot from the back. (17 - 13)

00:48:42 - 00:57:45 : Rothschild and Du Pont clash with Deverill and Samaniego on their way up the pitch, and a desperate pass from Du Pont to Ito ends with a whole lot of goopy goodness for Ito.

But don’t fucking worry, because Altizer-Berzelius is still in it, and she won’t let you forget it. She and Rasputin take that quod for a ride, and when Webberley tries to catch up with them Rasputin breaks straight into his path and sends him spinning out. With Horvat acting as a barrier between another longshot and a sure thing, Altizer-Berzelius takes that quod straight to the pot for another point. (17 - 14)

00:57:46 - 01:02:43 : The time is creeping up on an hour and Ilvermorny needs to ratchet up that defense to take control. Zettler gets his hands on the quod again and Rothschild and Altizer-Berzelius crack down on him, just barely holding off the De Witt freight train long enough for the quod do to the work for them. Zettler is off the field and Ilvermorny grabs hold of that momentum. Webberley fumbles the quod, d’Amore takes advantage, and he hurls the quod down the pitch to a waiting Rothschild, who deposits it straight in the pot for another point.

01:02:44 - 01:04:00 : Webberley and Rider are trying to deliver the quod to Deverill, but Rasputin and Iglesias are making it difficult. They flank the Kestrels to head them off, Rider pulls a sharp right while Webberley goes spinning, quod in hand, and he lobs a shaky pass Deverill’s way. She catches it right in her arms, and then takes a splat of fluff to the face.

01:04:01 - 01:06:36 : Two quick-tempered quods enter the field soon after. Webberley barely saves himself from a fluffy fate when he sees Iglesias barreling straight down on him. Horvat rescues her boy with a well-timed shoulder check to Iglesias, but she misses Webberley’s pass completely. Highbrow throws himself on the loose quod and lets out an obnoxious whoop just before it pops all over him. Determined not to fall victim to the same circumstances, the fierce Altizer-Berzelius snipes the next quod and zips off up the pitch—and runs smack dab into De Witt. The quod pops comically fast in her hands and Mr. Berzelius starts yelling for a redo from the sidelines.

01:06:37 - 01:11:24 : Iglesias gains the quod but just about loses her seat when Samaniego slams into it. Iglesias chucks the quod to d’Amore and he and Du Pont outstrip the field as they rocket toward their pot. With Du Pont acting as a buffer, d’Amore shows off his perfect form and tosses in three points for Ilvermorny. For the first time all game, Ilvermorny is in the lead, 17 - 18.

01:11:25 - 01:14:56 : Du Pont and Samaniego knock heads as they dive for that quod, but Samaniego’s had enough head injuries that she can probably handle it. She slams the quod down to De Witt before Du Pont can regain her senses, but the quod regains its senses before De Witt can get rid of it and he takes the bench.

01:14:57 - 01:23:36 : The field gets real empty real quick as we near an hour and a half of play. The aggressive Ilvermorny team won’t let Peckenpaugh near that quod, no matter how hard they try. Rasputin sends Webberley off course to take control of a quod that explodes just seconds later, and Rider forces Du Pont to change her plans when he blocks her path to the pot; she passes to Iglesias just in time for Iglesias to get taken out instead. Rothschild thinks he can get the team back on track, but Horvat has no time for Chad and she forces him into a corner. His few remaining teammates are unable to reach him in time and Rothschild takes his leave.

01:23:36 - 01:27:31 : There’s only one thing between Rider and the goal and it’s d’Amore, but not for long. As Rider streaks through the air, Horvat targets the other Captain, knocking him aside just moment before Rider reaches the goal, arm outstretched—and the quod pops a moment too soon, filling the pot with delicious fluff.

01:27:32 - 01:34:35 : The score is tight, the field is wide open for Peckenpaugh, and Gildersleeves tries to take advantage, streaking up the pitch toward the pot. But Gildersleeves is, as always, his own worst enemy, and he gets a face full of fluff before he gets too far. Good luck getting that shit out of your curls, Gildersleeves. Webberley and Samaniego bring it back to defense with the next quod, and they converge on the beleaguered d’Amore. He spirals upward, throwing himself higher and higher into the air to get past them. When he hears Du Pont nearby he spins around to throw her the quod—and finds Horvat instead. The quod blows, and Ilvermorny is down another man.

01:34:36 - 01:38:11 : The last Ilvermorny player on the field, Du Pont is avoiding getting a hold of that quod at all costs. Samaniego takes every chance she can get with it but she flubs her first shot. Webberley swings in for the rebound, Horvat keeping an eye on Du Pont, and the quod takes Webberley out before he can re-up that layup.

Samaniego ain’t ready to let that go and she snags that quod again and lines up another three-pointer, shooting that shot until the bitter end. But that quod always wanted her to suffer and she gets marshmallow in her nose when it takes her down at last.

01:38:12 - 01:42:45 : It’s just Horvat and Du Pont left on the field, and as much as Du Pont tries to smile through it, she looks a little intimidated. The last quod goes up and Horvat slams it right into Du Pont’s hands.

Du Pont needs to get rid of this thing quick if she wants to survive, and Horvat knows it. She dogs Du Pont, blocking her every exit, forcing her to fight for every inch she takes along the field. Du Pont is stuck midfield, quod ticking in her hands, the game riding on what she does here. There’s a shout from the sidelines.

“JUST DO IT!” Altizer-Berzelius screams from the benches, batting away Rothschild. “SHOOT THE FUCKING THING.”

Du Pont looks Horvat right in the eye and lobs the quod toward the pot. It arcs up over Horvat’s head, soaring toward the goal in a beautiful arc, bounces off the rim…

And explodes.
