the garden looks very nice today

The gardens do look rather lovely today, though maybe not supernaturally so. Plants have begun to return as spring creeps across the campus, the sun peeks out from behind the clouds, and the fountain in the hedge maze looks strangely… inviting? It looks cool, tranquil, and a few flowers have sprung up around the base, including a few purple buds. They could just be regular old morning glories, maybe a few honeysuckles, but they look a little misshapen, crooked. Might be worth keeping a sample, as long as you don’t make any ink out of them.

The graveyard is as it always is, still and silent. Once or twice, you can spot one of the Goodliffes watching from the window of their big purple Victorian, suspicious of what teenagers might be doing in the graveyard. Fresh flowers have been set out on several graves, and pebbles are stacked on the headstones of one or two.

In their wanderings, they find one thing of particular interest: a set of gravestones with fresh flowers set out. The larger of the two reads: CALEB QUALLS father. husband. hero. 1928 - 1989 and MARILYNN QUALLS mother. wife. warrior. 1931 - 1998.

The second gravestone looks as though someone’s made an effort to clean it fairly recently, but lichen still clings to it and it’s largely corroded. In addition to flowers, someone has left a set of small paint brushes. What remains of the headstone reads: “ALLS Dream sweetly, ... world is dim...r for losing y... colors. 1972 - 1989.”

HOW THIS WORKS

This took place on Tuesday, March 10th, after classes.

Junior Thorntrailers, Laszlo, and also Wyatt were invited to explore the gardens and graveyard with Armani.

Laszlo and Armani packed a little picnic basket for y'all. :)

Take flower samples back.

Possibly not go into the maze? He's been burned before and doesn't want to get trapped again. But he absolutely will the second anyone else expresses interest in going in. He just won't be the first one to suggest it.

Take pictures of the headstones for future reference. SUSPICIOUS THAT THE FLOWERS ARE SO FRESH.

Knock on the Goodliffe's door to try to talk to them. He thinks they might have been referenced last night but he wants to double check and rule them out if they don't seem to know anything.

This is her natural habitat, so of course Chanel is here.
She doesn't have any actual objectives, here, but she's going to clear lichen and leaves off the graves. Especially that last one. She'll ingratiate herself to the Goodliffes if given even just one moment of opportunity!

NATURALLY

Adrian came along! He's a little overwhelmed by all this stuff. Dancing birds? Cicadas everywhere? Evil bugs? Uhhhh man he's just trying to TA Symbology and win Quodpot, but he'll support his friends where he can!!!

Adrian will openly encourage poking around in the hedge maze, particularly since he saw reference to the fountain and the cicada shells in that anonymous entry.

Given his personal fear of dark magic, Adrian brought along a pocket sneakoscope. It did not go off for any mysterious reasons the whole trip.

also i meant to dropbox you but armani would've asked him to take a look at rex's sigil and give his thoughts, especially after last night when he used it to clear some vines.

Oh Adrian is so excited to look at a lepidopterite sigil. He also immediately recognizes it as "may no weeds grow in my garden" as Stirling had, but adds that with sigils, intent is the most potent component so it's hard to pin down definitive details without input from the sigil's author. A phrase like this could have been a simple wish for good luck, a literal protection against weeds in a garden, or a protective charm. It seems given what happened with the vines, it's a literal ward against plants, or a plant.

Sigils usually do their thing passively, so the fact that it "turned on" and withered a plant actively is exciting. Examining it, Adrian figures the sigil's still got a decent amount of magical power left in it, though it's hard to say how much.

Eddy tagged along. Before leaving Thorntrail, he took a moment to bury his now-gold cicada shell in the mud, with plans to check on it again in the morning. There's a lot of weird shit going on, including a ?? supernatural conflict between the local flora and fauna ?? that he's struggling to make heads or tails of. He's not sure what they're going to find, but Armani certainly seems excited about ~adventure~.

Eddy will offer an extremely helpful "Bug went nuts" when the maze fountain is mentioned.

Pick one of the purple flowers, more out of anxious energy than anything. He doesn't know shit about flowers.

Mickey is tucked into his shirt as usual. This is really not worth noting.

Wyatt came along. He brought both his fake baby (in a bubble charm) and his real baby (Earl the opossum).

He's not generally much help. He does taste the lichen on the second grave stone just to see if it tastes like the lichen that grew when he put his bugrock in his mouth.

Armani hums through tightened lips, eyeballing the maze. He wants to go in, but... seems like a trap. Maybe. But if it's a death trap, that only makes it more enticing. ... But, also, he doesn't want the blame to fall on him if anything happens to them in there. But, also also, he really wants to go in.

"Look at the maze," he says, gesturing to it as if there is anything else but the maze for them to look at. All he wants is for someone, anyone, to suggest going in.

Fiona peers at the second gravestone and does some mental math. "That's sad. She...or he...died when only a teenager." She looks back at the first gravestone. "Is this Mr. and Mrs. Qualls' child? Or would they have been too old then?" Math isn't her strong suit.

"Yeah," Eddy says, in possible agreement to one of Fiona's questions. He crouches low in front of the second gravestone, examining it silently. Qualls never held any particular interest for him - just another doddering old ghost - until the initials LQ showed up on his compatibility results. Because even if it was just more weird shit, Eddy's still a dumb teen too. Could it have said L'Ghostson, or likely some far more mundane L name on the stone at some point?

"89%," he notes to himself, then continues louder. "Shouldn't look like this?" He nods his head between the second and relatively new looking first gravestone, looking to the twins for confirmation.

Armani shakes his head, gently brushing his fingers over the headstone. He closes his eyes in thought for several moments. "Lars?" he breathes, "LQ... Lars Qualls?"

Eddy's lived with Seer-folk long enough to know to let Armani do his thing.. and long enough to know it's likely bullshit. Still. The stone's far too damaged to dispute it. "Is blonde," he agrees.
