MOTHGARDEN'S BUTTERFLY CHASE

the butterfly chase!!
what's up? Spring is in full swing! April’s almost over and the flowers at Mothgarden are reaching full bloom. There’s not a strange purple blossom in sight today on the Eastern Quarter, but that doesn’t mean Mothgarden isn’t bursting with color. Every shrub and magical hedge and living topiary is flowering today! Or...wait! Upon closer inspection, some of the flowers look like something else…butterflies! Fake ones, of course, little works of magic conjured up specifically for today. Grab your net because it’s time for Mothgarden’s annual butterfly chase!
visuals!
how this works! Students from all Houses gather outside Mothgarden after breakfast today for the butterfly chase, which begins at 10am and goes until noon. Afterward, a garden lunch is served on Mothgarden grounds.

Butterflies of all shapes and sizes, some local, some exotic, have been made from magic and set all over Mothgarden’s grounds. These butterflies can be caught with special nets provided by staff.
  • The official game nets must be used to count points! Any butterflies caught by other means (magic spells or bare hands, for instance) will disappear in puffs of colorful smoke.

  • The nets provided comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. Some look like they’re made of twigs, others are shaped like stars, some look like wind socks or koi flags.

  • These butterflies are magical in nature — no harm has come to any living butterflies for the game. Once caught in the net, the magical butterflies become solid and you can keep any you find.

  • There are three tiers of difficulty for this event. House Mothgarden is the easiest, the Left Maze is a little harder and the Right Maze is the hardest. However, if you choose one of the more difficult areas to hunt in, you will receive a bonus to your score as there are more rare butterflies in those areas.

  • The winningest student will receive a collection of fun and tasty potions from Mr. Berzelius. The winningest House will receive a point bonus toward the House Cup.

Post the form below to either the House Mothgarden, Left Hedge Maze or Right Hedge Maze headings, depending on where you’d like to hunt! You may thread or simply RNG check in under any of these headings.
NAME: Who’s hunting?
NET: What silly net did they wind up with?
DRIVE: 1 - 10. How intent are you on winning?
PATIENCE: 1 - 10. Are you scaring off butterflies before they’re even in reach?
DEPTH PERCEPTION: 1 - 10. You would be surprised how important this is to catching bugs.
ANYTHING ELSE?:

locations! HOUSE MOTHGARDEN: House Mothgarden is three tiers of gardens overlooking a large and well manicured lawn. With even the living topiaries trying to help, you’ll have plenty of luck finding butterflies here, but they’ll mostly be the common ones and as such earn you fewer points. If you’ve finished your hunt, you can relax here on Mothgarden’s upper levels. There are plenty of ivy-draped cubby holes to squirrel away in with a few friends.

THE LEFT MAZE: The friendlier of the two hedge mazes will do its best to lead you to butterflies while you hunt inside, but you may want to pop into the center to have a break on the gazebo at its heart. This is the second most difficult location to hunt butterflies in, but you’re more likely to find rare ones.

THE RIGHT MAZE: The Right Hedge Maze knows that all the flowers blooming over it are absolutely gorgeous and you simply must have a look. Butterflies? What? Oh, yes, there are butterflies in here somewhere. Rare and beautiful ones, but aren’t the flowers more interesting? Today, the Right Maze is more obstinate than usual, guiding students to particularly scenic parts of its interior, rather than to spots with butterflies. However, there are a ton of high value butterflies hiding within if you’re willing to put up with the maze’s shenanigans.

LUNCH ON THE LAWN: A few false butterflies are still fluttering in the air as the official festivities draw to a close and carts of little sandwiches, cakes and other snacks are rolled out for a garden picnic amongst the flowers.
