magikinetic sculpture race!

what's up? The day has come for a beloved Elflock Falls tradition: the Magikinetic Sculpture Race! Folks from around town and outside it gather on Main Street starting this morning, revving the engines of the kooky contraptions that will get them all the way around the track. Well, not quite engines; everything here must be powered by the drivers and aided by physics, but they can still make cool noises with their mouths while they wait.

The race itself takes up most of the afternoon, but it’s a little hard to catch every bit of the festivities. These works of art need to go on a real journey through the woods, across the Greentooth River, into some mountainous terrain, and then back down to Main Street for their momentous return, so hopefully they’re adaptable!

Onlookers are welcome to catch any part of the race, and they tend to clump up at some of the more notable bumps in the road, like the banks of the Greentooth. Most of the competitors find their way back to Main Street by the evening, though, and fans and friends gather on the sidewalks to cheer them across the finish line.

At the tail end of the race, the three Magirobotics club members spot something running, galloping just beyond the treeline. It’s a young man, but it also isn’t. Spidery and deeply wrong. He’s sprinting, though it’s hard to say where, or why. Really, it kind of looks like he’s fleeing something, but when they try to get Dr. Ranui’s attention, the thing beyond the trees is just...gone.

A silvery cicada lands on Felicity’s shoulder and it feels a bit like an ice cube. “Hey, didn’t know they still did this!” chirps the cicada in Felicity’s ear, it makes a clicking sound that might be laughter. “Whose seat should we charm to make an airhorn sound when they sit down?”

Several times throughout the afternoon Viola spots Mr. Crockett wandering around looking for someone. Turns out, he’s hunting for his brother, because he stops Viola to say, “If you see my brother. Or. Well, you know, the guy who looks like me. Can you please have him meet me by the sculptures?” Later, just before the race start, Viola spots Mr. Crockett sitting dejectedly on the hood of a two man sculpture with a wolf’s head hood ornament. Dr. Ranui is standing beside him with his hand on his shoulder, speaking in hushed tones. It’s hard to tell what he’s saying, but they do overhear, “...sorry … maybe he’s just…”

[CHARACTER F] definitely spots Ms. Min flirting with Ray Mayo over his mayonnaise shaped magikinetic sculpture and the whole conversation’s just as dorky as you’d expect.

While scoping out food cart snacks before the race, Armani spots Ms. Treetops, who seems to know that they’ve seen her. They watch as she walks around a food stall to the sizzling grill. They watch as she places her hands into the fire just beneath it. And then she looks up, and she watches with a wide smiles, more flowers blooming in her hair.
Armani starts to feel suddenly faint. The world begins to spin, and then just as abruptly it stops.
A hand lands on their shoulder. It’s Pocket. “Heeeeyyyy,” she greets, turning Armani away from the still watching Ms. Treetops. They find they can’t resist her urging. “Will you buy me a shaved ice?” she begs, pouting. “I don’t have any dollarydoos.”
If Armani looks back, Ms. Treetops is gone, and it seems that no one else around can see Pocket.

[CHARACTER H] organizes betting on the race on the downlow. When Administrator Kwan catches them exchanging dragots, they think they’re about to get busted, but she shushes them, winks, and puts 10 dragots on Peckenpaugh’s Magirobotics Club to win it.

During the race, [CHARACTER I] winds up with their foot run over by the wheel of one of the cars. Luckily, it happens right outside the Peck 'n' Paw and Dr. Kraus the veterinarian sees it. She checks their foot out, and it looks like they're okay, but they do get a free ride back to campus on a magikinetic bicycle so they don't have to walk.

how this works! ⬥ The Magikinetic Sculpture Race in Elflock Falls is a longstanding spring event that pulls in a pretty big crowd, so the town proper is bumping pretty much from morning until night. In addition to some pretty great sales, a few tents from travelling sellers peddling artificing oddities have also sprung up.

⬥ The race itself takes place at 4PM. Final period lets out a little early today so kids can hike down to town and watch, although Astronomy is still on tonight.

⬥ Here are a few of the participating teams:

Peckenpaugh Magirobotics (Eddy, Cicero, Willow and Dr. Ranui all manning)

Team Reelection Campaign (Zippy Zebrowski, Ex-Mayor T-Bone, and Mayor Perdita Hull manning)

Doc Potts on a Bike that looks like it’s made out of bones (does what it says on the tin)

Mayo Madness (the Mayo family, including Ray, Jay and Tay, and it looks like a giant jar of mayonnaise)

Al Falco & Friends (extremely old, famed Magizoologist-Adventurer Al Falco and four of his underlings, riding in a car shaped like a cicada)

⬥ Players may submit additional NPC sculptures for the race, however these should all be strictly NPCs — for example, if Joe Deverill's been secretly working on his sculpture for months and is ready to win it.

⬥ Results will be RNGed, with active participation raising the standing for Peckenpaugh’s team and any NPC teams your character may be associated with.

locations! ⬦ DOWNTOWN: BEFORE THE RACE: Racers start your engines! Things kick off at 4PM, but there’s plenty of time beforehand to take a gander and enjoy the festivities. Just like any Elflock Falls festival, the streets today are packed with onlookers. Shops are flung wide open today, their entrances decorated with banners for their favorite racers. Street sellers fill the Riverwalk peddling Artificing wares.

⬦ AROUND THE RACE: The path takes racers over the river, through the woods, up some mountainous terrain and then back down to Main Street itself. Do you stay downtown or follow the action? The Greentooth River crossing is always a good time if you love watching your mayor drag a cat out of the water, and don’t we all wanna see how Doc manages those rocky roads in his bone bike? Of course, yinzer welcome to stay in town and enjoy the atmosphere instead. A lot less walking that way.

⬦ AFTER THE RACE: Aaaand they’re back! Sculptures start crossing the finish line within a few hours and the streets are packed. The final vehicle limps across the finish line around 9:00 PM, but people are still lingering on the streets long past then, congratulating their favorites and cleaning out the vendor stalls. It’s not a bad evening to take the long way home, just get back before curfew!
