"Awwwww!" Claudia coos, rushing up to pinch the cheeks of the even more precious Xenia de Bourgh. "I miss our Xen, I was beginning to forget her sweet face."
"Oh, we're so setting her free," Jupiter adds as she wanders over, confidence belying her relief at finding Xenia's memory, and Xenia. That's one more name she can cross off the list. "God damn, wish I was like half this cute."
She shoves her hands into the pockets of her slacks and does a turn, looking around for what could be the linchpin. "Ooooooh, fireworks."
Hopefully, it's the fireworks. And if it isn't, well, she's gonna touch 'em anyway.
Lionel is playing catch-up, and frustratingly, without his wand. He watches his friends march cavalierly into Xenia's memory, touching things and people without an ounce of shame. Any illusions he's had about how Claudia and Jupiter freed him are immediately dispelled. It was surgery with an axe, not a scalpel, no doubt.
"Slow down," he suggests entirely too late, before joining them in investigating. He starts by bending and picking a flower. He sniffs it. What a weird world they're in. Fascinating really. Like an advanced virtual reality. "Can we bring this stuff back?" he asks, curious about the 'rules.'
"Hmmm, can you?" Claudia calls out to Jupiter, and she's skipping around, dress flouncing around her. "I tried to take a selfie of us in the last one and—oh! We should take another!" Wizstant camera in her hand, Claudia is already taking pictures with wild abandon. This is her senior prom!! Let her take pictures!!
"Yours was actually my first," she tells Lionel. "And we definitely didn't find anything you should feel weird about in your psyche."
Jupiter is plucking fireworks from the hands of children like they're dandelions. None of these are the linchpin, but who knows, maybe they'll come in handy saving Xenia or someone else. "Sometimes?" Admittedly, she isn't quite sure. Trudy had said that most things disappear.
She shrugs her shoulders lazily and rejoins the others, "Oh, let's get DeeBee in this one?" Without waiting for confirmation, she crouches down next to little Xenia, and once she's sufficiently posed she goes on, "You gotta find the important thing. And then the memory finishes. And then a door opens somewhere weird, and it sets everyone free." Jupiter isn't so great at talking when it's more than a few words, but she manages. "And sometimes there's vines and bugs and shit? Or a gameboy turns into goop."
There's something about the way Claudia says, "We definitely didn't find anything you should feel weird about in your psyche" that makes Lionel feel very weird about what they found in his psyche. But, there's nothing to be done about it now. They saved him and he should be thankful. You don't look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when that gift horse is Jupiter Quigley and Claudia Vega and you don't want to lose yet another pair of glasses.
Lionel assumes his place behind Xenia and puts his arms around the others. One, because he knows there's no talking himself out of this. And two, because he'd like a picture of the four of them. It's senior year. Sue him for being sentimental.
He smiles. "Thanks for rescuing me," he says, simply but genuinely, eyes still on the camera. Though the act of speaking may have had the unintended consequence of messing up his face for the photo.
Click. Click. Click click click. Claudia takes picture after picture, absolutely certain that at least one of them is going to look perfect, before releasing her friends.
"The goopy Gameboy actually had some really interesting things to say! Do you subscribe to a newsletter?" she asks Lionel, already plucking at different items in the scene. "And it was our pleasure." Plucking a strand of confetti from the air, Claudia twirls it around her head like a crown. "You looked almost as darling as Xen with your little golden glasses."
"Hey, Tiger, don't worry about it. Ride or die, right? Where'd we be without you?" Jupiter slugs him in the shoulder, beaming bright. The closest he will likely get to honest emotion from Thorntrail's quidditch captain. Her smile turns up, wicked. "Knew you'd pick Bulbasaur, though."
A snort of laughter. "Anyway, we gotta save Deebs, too, right?" She keeps looking, pausing to make appropriate faces every time Claudia snaps another shot. And then she spots the ring on Xenia's finger, a glint of gold. "Hey, you think...?"
"I subscribe to many newsletters..." Lionel replies, confused. Goopy Gameboy? Bulbasaur? His beloved golden glasses! What did happen in his memory? And with a sudden pang of terror, he worries that Jupiter's journal post he saw had something to do with his memory as well. Oh god. Oh god oh god.
"Ride or die," he echoes, dropping his head, hoping that'll be the end of that.
Lionel shifts his focus back to Xenia. The ring. Of course. It certainly seems to hold the most personal meaning of anything they've seen so far. "Makes sense," he says, before looking around and adding, "Nothing too embarrassing here." It's said mostly with relief for Xenia, but also a touch of jealousy.
"It's almost idyllic," Claudia says, throwing her arms up and breathing deep. It smells so crisp and clean and the view is nothing short of breathtaking. Honestly not the worst place to spend your senior prom.
Except for all the people missing.
Including the actual walking, talking Xenia de Bourgh. Which kind of puts a damper on that whole thing.
"Joopie, what did you see in my head?" she asks as she reaches out for the ring, lighting on the familiar golden band. "Did it goop on you?"
"Of course Deebs wouldn't have an embarrassing memory, she's—Oooh! Heeeey!" Jupiter coos, jabbing a finger at the glittering ring and then pumping her fist. "Bingo! Here we come, Xen!"
She glances up, at Claudia after and clicks her tongue, "Oh, just, like, a ton of balls mostly. You were awesome."
Lionel bites his tongue and doesn't ask clarifying questions about Claudia's memory that is "balls mostly." It feels like a trap. Better to just steer clear.
He lights up when young Xenia's ring begins to glow. "We've got her?" he asks, hopeful. "Xenia's okay?" For someone who's content to be alone always, he's unusually excited at the prospect of being reunited with all his roommates.
Before either of the girls can answer, things are in motion again, the memory resuming.
"I do!" Xenia exclaims, too loud by several measures. Her voice half-flattens the grubby crowd; they all rear back from her like it's microphone feedback, hands clapped over their ears, yelling.
Then, all at once -- miraculously -- they start to laugh. First one, then another.
"Wow, it actually works," one says.
"Yeah, that's cool."
"Weird."
"Maybe try your inside voice."
And Xenia laughs too, looking at once unsure and relieved and very pleased with herself.
Behind her, as the scene quiets back down, a neat slit appears in the air. A portal back to Peckenpaugh.

Claudia yelps in surprise when Xenia's voice bursts forth, knocking straight into Jupiter.
"Oh! Oh! That's what it's supposed to do, right??" she asks, giddily clapping her hands. "We did it! We have to go take pictures with her!" Claudia grabs onto Lionel's shirt as she hops past toward the portal, ready to dive right in, as everyone should do when they see a mysterious portal open up in a liminal space.
"We just gotta pick her up!" Jupiter affirms, rubbing her shoulder with one hand and blinking the blast of sound out of her head as Claudia bullrushes Lionel toward the exit.
Jupiter hangs, lighting her fingers on the frozen pre-teen Xenia's shoulder. "Super cool," she says, agreeing with the gathered children, and then jogs after Claudia and Lionel.
