'Numbers'

I like the generosity of numbers.
The way, for example,
they are willing to count
anything or anyone:
two pickles, one door to the room,
eight dancers dressed as swans.

I like the domesticity of addition—
add two cups of milk and stir—
the sense of plenty: six plums
on the ground, three more
falling from the tree.

And multiplication’s school
of fish times fish,
whose silver bodies breed
beneath the shadow
of a boat.

Even subtraction is never loss,
just addition somewhere else:
five sparrows take away two,
the two in someone else’s
garden now.

There’s an amplitude to long division,
as it opens Chinese take-out
box by paper box,
inside every folded cookie
a new fortune.

And I never fail to be surprised
by the gift of an odd remainder,
footloose at the end:
forty-seven divided by eleven equals four,
with three remaining.

Three boys beyond their mother’s call,
two Italians off to the sea,
one sock that isn't anywhere you look.

Mary Cornish

What I like about numbers is that they remind me I'm an absolute moron and I think that's good for a person (from time to time).

How do you feel about numerology?

I got TWO CARDS and I want to know why! WHO ELSE filled one out for me? I need to know which card is real. How will I know who to go to the dance with?

[Sophomores]

I hope you all know that I'm STILL IN DANGER and I still can't say why or I might DIE. And if I die I want you all to feel guilty forever for not doing more to help me.

That said, while I'm still alive, who did you get on your cards???

Thanks again everyone for participating in my little experiment! Just a couple of announcements about the cards for those curious:
  • If you got two or more cards, it's because a friend was thinking of you, I reckon. I examined timestamps and by and large it seems like names that appeared with a (1) are the originals.
    • Came to this decision because names with (2) were generally submitted at the same time in large groups with other names. Often with impossible class schedules or incorrect personal details. So it's not unreasonable to assume your pals were doin' bulk entries for folks.

    • If you have any more questions, let me know! Happy to assist!
  • Pocket did in fact submit her own card! I can tell because all the data loaded into CARDe at 12:01am last Monday shows up in the shape of a damn cicada and doesn't make any sense. I don't even know how CARDe interpreted it. Bug magic, I guess. Lucky lucky whoever matched high with her.

  • All the owls I sent successfully delivered except for one. I think if you got L.Q., it might've been a bug. Regrettably, CARDe had some [...] difficulties pulling the data on that entry. I don't know if I can recover it.

  • Whoever left me the purple flowers, thank you muchly! They're quite nice.
