I don't know if I'd say identify. We've been called hillbillies more than once or twice. When people say hillbilly, they usually mean people like us.

Yeah, that's not actually any better. Too bad they don't stink enough to get disbanded.

So, when people mean to be derogatory towards you, they use it. That's what you mean. Well, I can just call someone a jerkwad instead, I guess, if they call me a humgruffin. Better solution?
