pre-game Peckenpaugh's athletes, marching band, and fans all pack onto speedy Yeehawls with the Quodpot gear early this morning, shipping up to Boston. Not to find a wooden leg (ostensibly), but to play some explosive sports! While Mr. Youngblood rides with the Quodpot players and cheerleaders, and Ms. Beridze with the band, the Heads of House pack into a third Yeehawl with the student pep section. Ms. Gunzenhauser seems ready to adopt the Yeehawl driver as her new daughter. Dr. Ranui listens rapt to everything Mr. Berzelius excitedly tells him about his home town, and Ms. Altizer can be spotted still gripping a headache potion in each hand. The trip is a quick one given the magical nature of Yeehawls, and students arrive within a couple hours. The moment they're off the bus, Mr. Berzelius is greeted by a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Ms. Altizer. She kisses him full on the lips the moment she sees him and he seems positively delighted by this reception. Of course, there's no missing the loud groan Ms. Altizer utters at the sight of it.

Well, that's weird. Not a lot of time to go wandering (or wondering) right now. You'll all have time to explore after, so for now let's get to the pitch and game on!

It's a cold day here in Boston, with a high reaching all of 30 whole degrees. Both teams and the crowd are antsy to get moving and warm up. It's a good thing the cheerleaders are here to get your blood pumping! Both squads put on quite a show, and despite the impressive displays everyone still gets a good groan in when the cheerleaders reveal today’s secret ingredient to be baked beans, and Peckenpaugh cheer in particular looks lovely coated in it.

Waxweiler grabs the quod from the first face-off, but Ded is quick to react, living up to St. Hyginus’ fierce reputation. She uses those pointy elbows to nab the quod from Waxweiler and passes to Mungrillo—who immediately gets beaned for her trouble. Another quod comes out, and W. Quackenbush isn’t fazed by a couple elbows—which isn’t actually that helpful, because she’s the next to go. Hatfield refuses to follow her example, and she snags the next quod to nail a three-point goal. Birdsong follows up with a three-pointer of her own, tying the score at 3 - 3.

The quods are short-tempered this match, which Huynh learns the hard way when a quod takes him out almost immediately, and H. Quackenbush could possibly have made it further if he hadn't been attacked by a hungry bird after those baked beans. Peckenpaugh's Kestrel Captain and one of their sparrows take the L next, and Slaughter manages to give Ahn a bloody nose before she, too, is sent packing. Waxweiler swings in to get this game back on track, easily intercepting a pass, but Reddy and Xie are on his tail, and Waxweiler winds up stranded and covered in beans before long. Mere seconds into the next round, Duarte takes the quod directly to the pot for a dunk, bringing St. Hyginus just barely into the lead, 3 - 4.

Both teams' defensive lines are on fire now, and it's hard to get a shot off. Hatfield keeps Reddy from sinking a shot, and Reddy is the next one out. Ahn and Hatfield fall soon afterward, followed almost immediately by Ded. C. Quackenbush gets splattered with beans before the next round even begins, and another face full with the replacement quod, with another Peckenpaugh sparrow and McLaren falling victim to the great beaning immediately after. Wolff steps up to save the day next, and she's able to spirit down the field and nail an impressive three-point shot, but Birdsong won't let that stand and brings the score back to even, 6 - 6. Duarte attempts to pull back into the lead, and he, Birdsong, and Wetzel all wind up paying the price soon enough. Mundorf finally manages to get another dunk in the pot, and after Xie gets taken out in the next round, it's just Mundorf against Wolff and another Peckenpaugh sparrow.

It seems like things are going Peckenpaugh's way when Wolff pots a layup, even when her fellow sparrow goes down. It's just one-on-one, the score 8 - 7 in favor of Peckenpaugh. It's a cat-and-mouse game in the middle of the pitch, with Wolff and Mundorf either trying to pawn the quod off on each other, or just get to the pot. This quod doesn’t want to last long, though, and Mundorf proves to be quicker and feistier; he feints a shot, then drops the quod directly in Wolff's lap before it blows in her face, leaving Mundorf the last man on the field.

8 - 12!

varsity game After the bands have Captains Valkyrie Horvat and Adrian Gildersleeves shake hands with Captains Chaz St. Charles and Niamh Kilcoyne. Zettler and D. Khaled are sent to the center for their initial face-offs, and there's a long, tense moment punctuated only by a camera flash from the stands. Mr. Berzelius and the elder Ms. Altizer just took the cutest selfie.
  • 00:00:00 - 00:01:59 : St. Hyginus wastes no time living up to their reputation as aggressive players. D. Khaled wrestles the quod away from Zettler and shoots off up the pitch. Vega tries to follow and gets a hard knock and a bruised shoulder for her trouble, courtesy of Buggins. De Witt, hot on her tail, blocks an attempted shot by D. Khaled, and Samaniego swoops in for the rebound. As cool as she looked, she doesn't get far, and Samaniego is the first Varsity player to go out.

  • 00:02:00 - 00:07:59 : St. Hyginus immediately pegs De Witt as someone to watch, and when he gets his hands on the quod, Moist and J. Khaled swarm him. Forced to roll his way out of the situation, an upside-down De Witt tries to pass to Webberley, but gets intercepted by Belmonte. Try as they might to catch Belmonte before she gets to the end of the pitch, she's quick and sinks a 3-point goal to put St. Hyginus on the board.

  • 00:08:00 - 00:09:29 : Anxious to take control of the game, Gildersleeves and Clapsaddle rush the quod, but Buggins gets there first and it's a three-way collision mid-air. Buggins drops the quod to a waiting Van Donk, and a splatter of baked beans from below spells a quick end for Van Donk.

  • 00:09:30 - 00:14:59 : Peckenpaugh struggles as more quods come out. Duke intercepts a pass from Kilcoyne, and the hot quod ends her game in barely a minute. Buggins gets his hands on the next one and gets called out for trying to nail Zettler in the face with it; Zettler is too quick for his tricks and the quod winds up bouncing off Belmonte's face instead. Clapsaddle swings in to save the day with a handy catch and ends up playing herself, bringing more than the daily recommended serving of baked beans back to the bench with her.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:20:29 : J. Khaled takes control of the next quod, and he and McCool zip through the crowded field together, an unstoppable mid-air pair—wait, no, Deverill proves just how stoppable they are when she near about runs over J. Khaled, sending him spinning. McCool tries to flee the wrath of Deverill, but the beans put a stop to him before he can line up a shot.

  • 00:20:30 - 00:26:00 : St. Hyginus still has momentum on their side. Moist and Kilcoyne jostle others out of the way to get their hands on the quod and widen their lead. Gildersleeves, Webberley and De Witt swarm to surround the pair, giving them nowhere to go, which forces Moist to make a tricky pass to Belmonte, just outside the circle. Zettler swoops in out of nowhere for an interception, but Belmonte refuses to give up that easily and dives for the quod in his hands, nearly pulling Zettler off his broom in the process. Zettler responds fiercely and elbows (and possibly fists) start flying before the whistle is blown. Both of Zettler and Belmonte are given a penalty shot and 2 minutes in the penalty box to think about what they've done. They both easily make their shots, and at least Peckenpaugh is on the board.

  • 00:26:01 - 00:34:59 : Vipperman isn't so easily distracted. Rider is unable to stop her on her way to the pot for another two points, and when St. Charles just about upends Webberley's broom in the next round, there's Vipperman again, ready to catch the quod and get it to the pot. With five points scored in five minutes, St. Hyginus is sitting pretty at 1 - 9.

  • 00:35:00 - 00:36:29 : Ready to turn the tides of this game, Horvat takes the next quod. Vega follows, but O'Cool cuts her off before they reach the pot and Horvat just has Belmonte keeping her company as she streaks up the pitch. With no allies nearby, Horvat is forced into an outside shot; she misses, Belmonte rebounds, and immediately gets beaned. That was totally on purpose.

  • 00:36:30 - 00:38:29 : Siblings D. Khaled and J. Khaled struggle to get around Peckenpaugh's defensive lineup, especially when De Witt proves he can easily block multiple escape routes. When time runs out, De Witt might get splattered with beans, but it's D. Khaled who takes the bench.

  • 00:38:30 - 00:39:29 : That scoreboard is giving everyone bad vibes, and Horvat makes that Kilcoyne's problem; she clips Kilcoyne's broom with borderline excessive force to get her to drop the quod to a waiting Deverill, but Deverill seems to have used up most of her luck in the last game, and the quod takes her out within seconds of taking possession.

  • 00:39:30 - 00:45:59 : Another quick-tempered quod takes out St. Charles, and J. Khaled follows his sister out in the next round. Good riddance.

  • 00:46:00 - 00:50:59 : It's creeping up on an hour and St. Hyginus still has a comfortable lead. De Witt makes a desperate dive to intercept a pass from Buggins, and it pays off. He gets the quod to Gildersleeves before St. Hyginus can retaliate, Gildersleeves passes to Rider who passes to Vega, who's still outside the scoring circle when she shoots and scores. Finally.

  • 00:51:00 - 00:55:29 : Zettler has possession and Buggins won't let him so much as move, forcing Horvat to come to the rescue. She flies straight at Buggins, daring him to sit still or get out of the way, and his brief distraction is just enough for Zettler to get the quod to Vega, who manages to sink another three-point shot. At 7 - 9, Peckenpaugh is still behind, but they can breathe a little easier now.

  • 00:55:30 - 00:56:29 : With Horvat and De Witt acting as physical barriers, Webberley is easily able to grab that quod and make a beeline for the goal. Too bad the quod has other plans, and it blows in under a minute. At least Webberley has a protein-filled snack to keep him company on the bench.

  • 00:56:30 - 00:58:29 : The round starts with O'Cool running straight into the brick wall that is De Witt and knocking himself off his broom. While the athletic directors from the two schools argue over whether or not that was a foul on De Witt's part, O'Cool is subbed out, and St. Hyginus brings out JV's Ded. Play resumes and Gildersleeves takes advantage of the slight chaos to nab the quod and... does not get very far before getting beans up his nose.

  • 00:58:30 - 01:03:59 : The quod is in Horvat's hands, but every time she tries to line up a shot, Vipperman is in her face, trying to steal. She's too focused on Horvat to notice Rider sneaking in just below, and Horvat drops the quod straight down to him, giving Rider the perfect opportunity to make a dunk.

  • 01:04:00 - 01:07:29 : It's De Witt with the quod, and despite O'Cool's probable brain damage, Buggins still thinks he can take on the big man. He shoots straight toward him, and when De Witt drops down to dodge him, he ends up slamming his knees into De Witt's head, sending him rolling. It's enough for Ded to grab the quod, who's so determined to prove she's worthy of being subbed into the Varsity game that she winds up getting taken out in under a minute.

  • 01:07:30 - 01:12:59 : De Witt refuses to engage St. Hyginus' dirty tricks. He gets a hold of the next quod and points straight toward the goal, ignoring and barreling through multiple obstacles along the way. He makes good enough time that he is able to line up a near-perfect three-point goal, bringing Peckenpaugh into the lead, 10 - 8.

  • 01:13:00 - 01:15:59 : Anxious to take back their lead, Moist steals the quod from Vega, but he's slowed down by Horvat and Rider. Moist is undeterred and tries to shoot the gap between them, only to get all three of them blasted with beans. Moist and his new skincare treatment head off the field.

  • 01:16:00 - 01:19:59 : There's a bug in Zettler's ear right now—or is it a Buggins? He hovers just behind Zettler, hissing taunts as he shadows him down the pitch. It's not much of a distraction, but it's just enough for Kilcoyne to get a shot past the two of them. The shot bounces off the lip of the cauldron, only to be caught by Vipperman on the rebound, and Vipperman is immediately caught by beans.

  • 01:20:00 - 01:25:59 : Buggins is at it again, jeering at Zettler in a sing-song voice. Luckily Zettler meditated recently, and when Rider lobs him the quod, he puts it away and adds another three points to Peckenpaugh's lead.

  • 01:26:00 - 01:28:59 : No time to celebrate. Peckenpaugh is up 13 - 8, giving them just enough of a cushion to tie the game if they all get knocked out, and that's fast becoming a possibility. Horvat earns herself a foul when she side-swipes Buggins to keep him out of Zettler's way, but the clock runs out on Zettler before he can repeat the last round. Shortly afterward, Rider suffers the same bean-filled fate, getting less than a minute to bond with the quod.

  • 01:29:00 - 01:31:29 : Buggins and Kilcoyne are all that's left of the St. Hyginus contingent, and they are determined to stop that quod. Horvat channels every ounce of that clear-headed, calming energy to ignore them, though she's helped by De Witt and Vega running interference. She easily takes the quod directly to the pot and deposits it in the potion. That's Peckenpaugh 14 - 8.

  • 01:31:30 - 01:35:59 : Buggins' head is plenty cloudy with frustration at this point, even with Zettler off the field, and the quod can sense it. He storms off the field, dripping with beans, after wrestling it away from Vega. It's Vega who gets a Beantown makeover next; she's able to stop Kilcoyne from making a shot, and ends up holding the smoking quod when it explodes.

  • 01:36:00 - 01:38:29 : It's just Kilcoyne versus Horvat and De Witt at this point. Kilcoyne knows who she'd rather go up against in the final round, but the quod has other plans. Horvat nabs the quod, and with De Witt's help it's no problem to get around Kilcoyne. Unfortunately the beantastic ball goes boom just inches from the scoring zone.

  • 01:38:30 - 01:40:45 : This is not the outcome Kilcoyne wanted, but who cares about what she wants? De Witt lets her take the quod, banking on his defensive skills slowing her down before she can retake the lead. A fast and fearless flyer, Kilcoyne shoots through De Witt's legs. De Witt catches up to her easily, slowing her down and forcing her to bob and weave all the way down the pitch. It's with a hint of desperation that Kilcoyne pulls back and hucks an unlikely shot toward the pot—and the unlikely shot is easily blocked by De Witt's outstretched hand seconds before it explodes. The last one to touch the quod, De Witt is eliminated, leaving Kilcoyne the last player on the field. The game is over! Will the last man standing bonus make a difference?

The Yeehawls are scheduled to leave by 8PM, with return to Peckenpaugh anticipated by 10PM.

We've established a few set pieces below under the After The Game sub-header, including an "AROUND BOSTON" header for scenes that fall somewhere specific. Please assume that while students are being trusted to be responsible, there is probably a chaperone nearby, whether school staff, town NPC, or helpful parent volunteer.
