But! Do you think an animal can really be a nihilist?
Perhaps, I'm supposing, you have to have some concept of death first.
That's tricky to tell.

I think animals understand death. I don't think they can turn off their will to live though.

Maybe not. But it's not always a choice. Or the choice.
You can be morally nihilist with no existential judgements involved.
That strikes me as very rodent in spirit.

I don't think hamsters have any concept of right or wrong.

But guinea pigs absolutely do.

You can see it in their eyes and hear it in their plaintive cooing.
