i was watching when they gave mr. potkin a seizure. it sounded like they were questioning him about mr. qualls before he dropped. i was also there when lionel asked mr. qualls about his brother and caused him to bug out.

what i'm saying is that it doesn't seem to take much effort. mr. qualls is at the center of whatever this is and asking pointed questions might not give you the answers you want, but maybe the results.

it seems like something magical is blocking their memories and punishing them when they try hard to recall them, like a curse. i'm not sure that veritaserum would work since they can only tell you what they know.

but veritaserum is a controlled substance and, besides, it takes an entire month to brew. what if you wrote your questions down in advance and then asked him for an interview? or [...] let me help you! i can talk for you, we can try different teachers. and if a cicada drops out of them, it's yours.

but veritaserum is the riskier gamble. you could get your cicada and also get expelled, or you could not get your cicada and also get expelled. without it, the worst you'll risk is a social blunder.

trullinger is nice. we asked him about the cicadas before and he didn't notice as it buzzed in his hand, so maybe you'll get something good out of him if you ask about qualls.

questions! let's see... you could lead in with something like, "hello, mr. trullinger. would you mind if i asked you a few questions about the history of peckenpaugh and elflock falls for a piece i'm doing for my radio show?" since he's the appalachian history club sponsor, it seems totally normal to go to him. and then... you could make something up to get him to talk about mr. qualls, even if it's not true.

what if they didn't know you were recording? you could slip my phone into your pocket and use that to record. they probably wouldn't expect you to have one. (no offense. but also we've all seen you in muggle tech.)
