GILLYBALL GAME

GILLYBALL GAME
what's up? The sun is shining and it's a beautiful day! Perfect weather to dive thirty feet under the water to play some Gillyball!

Howdy's Mermom, Ria, waits for the students to gather at the docks so she can explain the rules to those who haven't played and didn't already attend the practice session that was held on Thursday. Her voice is rough and shrieky above water, like nails on a chalkboard, but she uses very fluid and elegant hand movements to sign as she speaks.

"W̷e̶'̷l̵l̵ ̵g̷o̸ ̴o̵v̷e̷r̷ ̸i̵t̶ ̵a̵g̶a̶i̴n̷ ̷w̷h̸e̶n̸ ̴w̸e̸'̷r̴e̷ ̷u̵n̶d̸e̸r̶," she says with a laugh, showing off a razor sharp row of pearly white teeth. "N̶o̴w̶ ̶g̸e̸t̷ ̷o̵n̴ ̷y̴o̷u̶r̴ ̵w̴e̵t̴s̷u̸i̴t̶s̴ ̸a̶n̷d̷ ̴t̸a̶k̶e̸ ̸a̵ ̶b̸a̴l̸l̷ ̷o̵f̸ ̴G̶i̸l̴l̵y̸w̵e̵e̴d̸!"

Players and spectators are offered balls of Gillyweed from a woven kelp basket and are told to wait until they're ready to enter the water to eat it. Wyatt either doesn't pay attention or doesn't understand what was said and immediately horfs that slimy glob down. Everyone watches as they transform on the spot, gills sprouting from their neck as their feet elongate into fins and their fingers grow long and webbed. Ria gives them a thumbs up and screeches something in Mermish that can universally be understood as, "Lookin' good!"

Howdy and Cowpoke Stoppelbein are the captains and spend some time bickering over who picks first before they both shout "VALKYRIE HORVAT" at the top of their lungs. Howdy's a little louder, though, so it looks like Val's on team Bass Pro Pyramid Head. "MAISYFELICITY," Cowpoke spews as fast as he can, and then it becomes a race between the brothers to quickly claim the girls for their team before calmly and diplomatically choosing players from the remaining guys.

With the teams uneven, Howdy looks around his feet for a moment before scooping his little Mersister up from the dock like a football. She affectionately sinks her tiny needle-like teeth into his arm, to which he remains unfazed. "Guess Yeehaw's playin'." And just when it seems like he's joking, he slaps a glowing Guppy badge onto her chest and chucks the toddler out into the lake as she shrieks with delight.

"Let's play ball!!"

TEAM STATS
Levels are based off of player responses from the experience portion of the sign up form. To keep the team experience levels and available stat points balanced and fair, assigned levels cannot be changed and new players who missed the sign up deadline cannot be added.

Each level has a maximum number of points you can distribute among three stats: Speed, Aggression, and Defense.

Speed makes you swim faster. You're more likely to score goals by outswimming the competition. The Grindylow is hardly a threat if it can't catch up to you!

Aggression focuses on offense. You're more likely to win encounters against other players and break through their defenses to score goals. Teach the Grindylow a lesson by attacking it first!

Defense makes it easier for you to block shots, stop players by getting in their way, and remain level headed in conflict. The Grindylow's antics have a harder time confusing you!.

Level 1: 7 points. Kermie, Kirby, Maisy.
Level 2: 8 points. Mia.
Level 3: 9 points. Jupiter, Tybalt, Imogen, Claudia, Eddy, Felicity, Wyatt, Lydia, Adrian, YEEHAWWW.
Level 4: 10 points. Valkyrie.
Level 5: 11 points. Howdy & Cowpoke.

QUICK RUNDOWN
  • This is a contact sport but Healer Greatheart is on site and Pre-Healer Studies Students have been offered the opportunity to assist her. Injuries, at worst, will be pretty mild in this watered (hah) down version of the game and can be easily healed afterward.

  • Guppies play by no-contact rules. Incidental touching is fine, but blatant rule breaking will get the whistle blown on them. Guppies are distinguished by their guppy-shaped badges on their shirts, which glow to make them highly visible under water.

  • Teams wear yellow and blue colors to tell each other apart. They are colors that are still distinguishable at depth underwater. The blood of your enemies looks green now. :)

  • Fancier Gillyball fields can be raised out of the water as floating orbs to accommodate land-dwelling fans. But this isn't that. Everything takes place underwater, including spectating.

Players are confined to a sphere with crystal clear water inside for high visibility. The boundaries of the sphere are marked by faintly glowing lines. The Gillyball cannot escape it and will ricochet off the sides but for safety reasons, players are able to pass through the magical boundaries. Leaving the orb will incur a penalty, though.

  • After the game, there's going to be a grill out for all your general lake roleplay needs.

  • how this works!
  • Post your forms with your stats and your results will be rolled! Team scores are averaged based on responses so it's not that big of a deal if a player forgets to tag in.

  • Head to the PvP section to score more goals! These are considered bonus points added on top of (or subtracted from) the team score instead of averaged in. They're a way to reward player interaction and participation.

  • To attack other characters, each player must first reply to the PvP header so that other characters have the opportunity to attack them as well. Guppies cannot be physically harmed or do physical harm to others but their PvP turns will be rolled the same, with the assumption that nobody is making contact unless specified by the players.

Each character gets three turns to either attack a player or defend their goal post, retroactively subtracting points from the opposing team by blocking shots. If you're posting some flavor text and don't actually want to use up a turn, just note it in your response!

  • Player-against-player stats are balanced so that no competing stat is higher than 4 . For example, if Howdy poured all his points into aggression (11) and tried to attack Cowpoke who has a defense of 0, he would have an advantage on the attack (1d20 + 4 vs 1d20 + 0) but would not automatically obliterate his brother into dust.

(This might be adjusted later for balance, depending on how rolls go.)

  • Howdy has four Magitechnical Grindylows on the loose and they're just here to ruin your good time! They may attack players, get in their way, and try to turn them around, although a more punchy player might find that the Grindylows aren't as tough as they act. Since they are mechanical beings with no obvious feelings, Guppies may choose to attack them. Gindylows will not physically harm Guppies, but they'll try to find other ways to be a nuisance.

  • There's also a mermaid toddler with very sharp teeth. She's a rebel who will not be beholden to a rule book, although she does seem to respect the glow of the Guppy badge when it comes to choosing a victim to sink her teeth into. Isn't she cute??

  • locations! BEFORE THE GAME: Hang out with Howdy's mermommy.

TEAM STATS & ROLLS: Post your form here and get your first round of results.

PvP Zone: Post your character's header to start and confront other players or defend your goal post by blocking shots. Points can be scored or retroactively subtracted from the other team.

Underwater Scenes (Players & Spectators): Feel free to react and thread in the other sections, but here's a neat section if you prefer that.

Post-Game Grill Out: Enjoy the fun atmosphere of high school while it lasts. 😎 Grillmaster and Howdy's other mom, Gin, has dropped by and may or may not be trying to flex on her ex-wife with her grilling skills.
