Before Merlin can actually even say anything, Holland is pulling out two plastic champagne flutes and a small set of plates from a tiny basket she'd brought with them. She hadn't doubted the other senior's willingness, but also she was going to enjoy herself, even if he didn't want to.
After pouring the juice and putting two petit fours a piece on each plate, she beams. "I always take hostessing seriously. Thank you for dressing up. And for coming. It really means a lot; I'm sure Val appreciates it too."
"Your priorities are inexplicable but appreciated," Merlin returns with a grin, visibly perking up at the sight of the petit fours even if Holland only puts two on each plate. Hopefully that's just part of the aesthetic and she's not planning to hold out on him. He slowly stops rowing, securing the oars and allowing the boat to drift lazily as he reaches for a plastic flute. After a pause he raises his glass, silently inviting her to toast.
"I'm here because I want to be. It's not a favor or anything," he returns, eyebrows quirking up, "Besides. When else was I going to get to wear this?" He tweaks the anchor necklace he's wearing to illustrate his point.

"They can't be surprising to you, though," Holland says of her priorities - Merlin surely knows her well enough to expect this. Regardless, at least they're appreciated. She's appreciated, it seems. Maybe. She is working rather hard, so hopefully.
She raises her own glass before taking a delicate sip, mindful of her lipstick even though, thanks to magic, it won't be budging. It never hurts to be extra careful. "Well, it's still nice of you, anyway. And you must have that necklace for a reason. Were you not expecting a nautical picnic when you headed to school this year?"
