LaszloSomeone has mixed a handful of misshapen cookies into the display. They taste heavily of roses, almost to the point where it's like eating perfume. Anyone who tries them will intermittently cough up rose petals for an hour.
Surely this has some sort of practical application. Laszlo just hasn't decided what it is yet.
Though Holland could have mixed the mocktails before the picnic, it's more fun to pretend like she's a real bartender and mix up each drink by hand as they're ordered. Plus, it gives her a goal and something to focus on, which means in the end she'll enjoy the trip a lot more. Less time for fussing is a huge help! Thematically dressed, lounging on a blanket, and all smiles, she's so happy you came. Even if you're a picnic crasher.
This is... cute. Low-key, themed, non-alcoholic, with no one getting rowdy or tossed in the water—exactly the kind of get-together Maureen O'Malley would love to put on, and Mary Grace O'Malley would love to ruin for her.
But, well, without a hovering authority figure here to spite, there's not really a whole lot of fun to be had chuckin' someone in the lake. For now.
"Got a challenge for ya, bud," she says, elbowing Wyatt in the side as they wander up to the scene.
Wyatt's not much into the romantic boat rides, but he does like snacks, so he needed very little prodding to attend this event in his denim cargo shorts.
"Before you say it, yes I can fit more little sandwiches in my mouth than you."
Lionel has been looking for a chance to talk to Val all afternoon, but the opportunity just hasn't presented itself. There were the pesky wasps, some dramatic freshman, her boat ride with Armani, etc. Val has been busy, naturally. She still is in fact -- engaged in a conversation with Cedar of all people, the walking, talking bad luck charm -- but Lionel approaches her nevertheless. The event is winding down. There might not be another chance.
"Hello," he interrupts. "Can I talk to you about something?" Then to Cedar, not unkind, "Alone."
Merlin isn't Holland's idea of a romantic boat partner (they butt heads too often), but she does like the boy so it's nice to be rowing with a friend. She's surprisingly leisurely about the whole thing, letting Merlin take control when he wants but also happy to do whatever herself. Almost relaxed Holland is a pretty amazing feat.
"Oh, I brought some sparkling grape juice and petit fours, if you want," she nearly chirps once they're off the dock.
Merlin may be one of the least romantically-minded people at the Peckenpaugh School of Magic and it doesn't even occur to him to that Holland may've had another outcome in mind. Still, the two of them are both dressed for today's theme and make a festive (if mismatched) pair as they set off from the dock in a little rowboat. And the almost immediate announcement of snacks makes her seem like the perfect partner in his mind, anyway.
Turning his attention momentarily from the water to flash her a grin, he responds, "You know I do. You're taking this hostess thing seriously, huh?"
Lionel grew up next to a lake and has spent many afternoon out on the water. He'd swim with Zadie some, but he's always preferred boating. There's something calming about floating in the middle of the lake. There's a weightlessness to it, and a relaxed body means a relaxed mind. A rarity in Lionel's life.
Once onto the lake, Lionel tips the oars up out of the water, letting the boat slowly float forward on its own momentum. He savors a deep breath of fresh air. He doesn't know Audrey very well -- he doesn't know many people very well -- but he's always enjoyed her presence in Creative Writing Club. "Are you reading anything good right now?" he asks with genuine curiosity.
With a napkin full of cakes and cookies in her lap, Freya is prepared for anything. Every good adventure starts with provisions! (And a cuteoutfit. The omnioculars hanging around her neck don't really go with the nautical vibe, but whatever.)
"Soooo," she begins casually, as they head out onto the lake, "do you know if the siren's been seen recently?" It's a COMPLETELY INNOCENT conversation opener.
Armani is such a delicate flower, what with his poor little ankle and all, and he's sooo thankful to have someone gallant and strong like Valkyrie help him into the boat. He places his hand very gently into hers and with all the grace and elegance he can muster, he steps in before turning to try to help Val balance her way inside.
"You'll protect me from the siren, won't you?" he asks, trying to sound coy.

Lionel is here, though he's a little unsure why.
Lyss, lemme know if you'd like to do a boat scene. Also, if anyone else would like to do a boat or shore scene with him, I'm very down.
