Chanel really should have eaten dinner before trying to shop for books. She's a dancer, and tries to keep a healthy diet, but coming to this town has helped her learn there is moderation in all things, and all junk food. Moderation is not the hot dog stand today. The one with chili and slaw looks like a train wreck. And how would she even eat it? There's no elegant or mysterious way to shove a hot dog in one's face.
But it all smells annoyingly good. She's curtailing her morbid curiosity by, of course, mocking pieces of inanimate meat. She leans to the person next to her, and wrinkles her nose. "I wonder if there's real roadkill in there."
This is, of course, just a little too loud. She still can't really hear her own voice. She doesn't appear concerned.
Chanel Insults Some Hot Dogs, Laszlo is Less Discerning
Laszlo is new to this world of choice. This realm of ketchup and salsa, processed meats and as much cheese as he could ask for. Fried foods and soft white bread. Coffee that tastes like ice cream. Cup cakes and bags of cookies that he buys after a shift at the apothecary.
It's still exciting.
So he stands next to Chanel with a hot dog that's barely recognizable under all the toppings. "I wouldn't be able to tell."
Chanel Insults Some Hot Dogs, Laszlo is Less Discerning
Although she understands only about half of what he actually said, the intent is clear: Laszlo has a monstrosity, and he's going to eat it. Her disapproval is written all over her face, even if she can't bring herself to chide him properly. She doesn't know the whole story of his home life, but the threads that stick out are that he was deprived, now he's not. And if a hot dog makes him happy, probably she should let him have it.
But not without a slow shake of her head. "What did they do to that?"
