"A girl's gotta eat," she replies without thinking, and then ducks her face behind her book pile to hide how stupid she feels for blurting something weird. For a few seconds, radiating enough embarrassment to be picked up by a geiger counter.
One hand out, she accepts the book. "Sorry about that," Winter goes on, peeking over her book stack once more, curious. "So, are you like just hangin' out cuz you're l-lost down here forever and have given up all hope?"
Eddy fixes a bewildered look on Winter as he attempts to decipher what the connection is between eating and the pile of books she's carrying. Most things seem to provoke that maybe-confused-maybe-in-pain expression out of him. He should really recognize the signs of embarrassment better given how often he's there himself, but then she's breezing forward, bringing his thoughts back to where they'd been lost all day.
A long exhale and a grimace. "Something like that," he agrees, ever uncomfortable taking up too much space, even in his friends' lives. Closing his own book, which he normally would be very interested in, he pushes to his feet and slides half of Winter's stack into his own arms. "Don't worry about it. Lot of books."
Eddy exudes the sort of awkward tension that Winter, herself, imagines she radiates always. Perennially uncomfortable, even in spaces where he shouldn't be. That's not a judgment. More like a glimpse in a mirror. Winter relates. She commiserates. Today, that tension seems especially pronounced, deep and sharp-angled in an unpleasant way. Winter wonders what's wrong, but is afraid to press further.
Instead, she opts for trying to lend support. Distract. "Lucky for you, I'm an excellent navigator," she says, stammering only a little and glad to have the carrying assistance. "We'll be out of here in no time." Probably. "And/or have a cool adventure. Certainly we'll make it to our next shifts, at least."
