MAGIROBOTICS CLUB ROBO DANCE OFF AND... oh...

magirobotics club robo dance off
what's up? Dr. Ranui wants some good, clean fun. No mayhem, no sentient robots who need to be put down, no setting the entire shed on fire: tonight, Magirobotics Club gets to show off their little mechanical friends without fearing for the safety of everyone around them!

For most of the month, the club has been focusing on movement and getting their robots to obey commands both simple and complex, and preferably to a beat. There’s already music playing when the members filter into the Artificing Shed tonight, and Dr. Ranui greets them from the middle of a miniature disco dance floor, where he and his own boogiebot, Beatbot, are warming up. He shows off how Beatbot can play just about any song you can imagine while simultaneously busting some sick moves, but the four freshmen recruited to judge the contest give him straight 1s. He sputters and sparks a little at the low score, but otherwise keeps right on playing. What a good omen!
how this works! Magirobotics Club students can check using the form under the DANCE-OFF header. A panel of four freshmen judges will score their bot's boogieing! We'll announce a winner later.

Students who are not magirobotics club members are welcome to come watch, but only Magirobotics Club members may enter the contest. Artificing students, in particular, were made aware that the contest would be happening.

Oh...and...I guess something happened... Maybe you should go check out that header to find out...
locations! DANCE-OFF: It's time to break it down, bots! Magirobotics Club members, post your forms here!

THE ARTIFICING SHED: The shed's been cleared of its usual clutter. In the very center of the room a tiny wooden dance floor has been set up. A panel of freshmen judges sits to one side, and on the other, there's room for the audience to watch. Dr. Ranui stands with his wand at the ready, in case any fires need to be put out. Want to thread hyping your bots up before their debut? Or maybe you're part of the peanut gallery watching the display? You can thread about it here!

FATAL EXCEPTION ERROR: SOMETHING WENT WRONG...: Oh—oh no...

THE ARTIFICING SHED: Eddy and Chanel Do A Pep Talk

Any way you slice it, Eddy looks nervous. That is, of course, just one of his default settings, along with: awkward, uncomfortable, and maybe indigestion. Crouched over the small, mouse-eared robot, he keeps fiddling with this joint or re-tightening that bolt and when he isn't, he's chipping at the last remains of the black varnish on his nails. This is the first competition since he joined the Magirobotics team and Eddy, for as shy and antisocial as he seems to be, puts a lot of stock in how well he can contribute to a team. He also, unfortunately, is very terrible at dancing.

Forcing himself to still his hands, due more to lack of time than anything else, he stares at the robot for a long pause. Mickey the First seems to recognize this is an important moment and stops her exploring to perch atop Mickey the Second's head, waiting. Another beat, and then a single 'yep' that evokes a whole silent litany of oh Merlin oh fuck this is really happening along with it. It's not much of a pep talk.

Chanel, on the other hand, is buzzing with excitement. Eddy did literally all of the work in Mickey II’s actual creation, but she’s certainly taking credit for the robot’s soul. Or at least for the way it actually looks graceful dancing. Sometimes. With a dark sleeve, she shines up one of her baby’s ears.

“You’re going to knock everyone else dead,” she coos, giving the bot an air kiss and then nudging Eddy in the arm with her elbow to perhaps jostle him out of any nerves. “And so will you.

The jostle is like pushing a reset button on the whirling in Eddy's brain. He needs those sometimes, a physical push to keep him from getting lost forever in his thoughts. Chanel's draws out a small smile as his attention shifts to her. It's still full of nervous tension, but it's thankful too - for the reboot, that she has his back, and everything she's done to help with the creation of Mickey II.

He makes a belated show of cupping his hands over the mousebot's round little ears. "Careful with the d-word around the bots. Not great at telling when people are joking."

Chanel can see the reset. She moves to lean companionably on his shoulder, to really keep the motor whirring, as it were. She’s certainly not one to say this in so many words, but she really is proud of him and what he’s achieved, here. It looks difficult, and at the very least, he’s stepping so far outside his comfort zone. But all of that would sound stupid out loud.

She lets her grin become a little manic, instead, the kind of smile a supervillain would make. “Oh, you see, though, I’d love your robot to start the technological insurrection. We’d be spared, as its creators.”

Yeah. Saying words out loud is hard. Especially when they're feeling words and they come out all jumbled and stupid sounding. Eddy doesn't shrink away from the pressure on his shoulder. Some things don't need words. He keeps his movements careful now not to abruptly jostle Chanel.

"Less it's anything like its namesake." He scoops up the small field mouse he constantly complains about, yet is rarely seen without, holding her in his palm for Chanel's consideration. Mickey chitters a little with indignation. "Then we're in real trouble."
