A RIVERBANK PARTY!

a riverbank party
what's up? Try as they might, the cries of crickets and frogs can’t quite overpower the thrum of music blaring from Bluetooth speakers tonight. Down by the river, well south of campus, off the beaten path and through the brush, a Welcome Back party of magical teenage proportions has been cooked up for the students of Peckenpaugh. It’s hot and muggy tonight even with the sun down. The air is damp and heavy with the green smell of late summer, the Greentooth is still warm enough to splash around in. It’s perfect party weather!

A bonfire crackles near the shore, bathing the pebble beach clearing in a warm golden glow. Large magical orbs bob in the air above party-goers heads, flickering lazily like giant fireflies—they change color when you touch them, so have fun batting them around. The area has been cordoned off with old rope fishing nets woven through with plastic fish charmed to glow faintly in Peckenpaugh house colors. Every once in a while, a fish opens and closes its mouth, exhaling a bubble that becomes a new glowing firefly. Two wheelbarrows, both full of bottled drinks (one sodas, the other cheap alcohol), flank a table of carb heavy finger food and a tacklebox of s’more ingredients. A kiddie pool has been stocked with a variety of "goodies"—drinks, snacks and magipax branded "goodie bags" attached to toy fishing rods. Grab a favor and reel in a treat!

volunteer slots! [TREASURE HUNTER A] mistakenly believes that they’ve joined in yet another kissing game. Oh, that should make for an awkward little adventure.

[TREASURE HUNT PARTICIPANTS B & C] discover a small leak in their rowboat. Hm. This complicates things.

It looks like MERLIN & TONY have a stow away. MERLIN discovers a mouse in their rowboat once they've set off. Is this a new friend, or mayhem waiting to happen?

[CHARACTER F] shrieks when they feel something skitter across their feet. It's just one of the Moody Muscheron trying to make off with someone's portable phone power bank, though. What's the little fungus need this for?

Oh, no one fixed the leak in the rowboat and now it's worse. Shit. With water filling their little boat, [TREASURE HUNTER G] thankfully comes up with a creative, wandless way to stop the leak!

how this works!
  • It’s Peckenpaugh’s first student run party of the year! Excepting Pocket Parties, teen ragers tend to spring up wherever they can avoid detection. Tonight’s festivities take place south of campus, on the river.

  • The party runs from 6PM to 10PM. While Peckenpaugh does not have prefects to enforce curfew, the party organizers are responsible enough to ensure all students are off party premises with time to make it to their dorms for night check-in. (In House curfew is 11:30PM on Saturdays.)

  • Students can assume they know when the party is happening and where. All students, unless otherwise noted by pcal, volunteer slots or prior discussion with the mods, made it past any adults they might’ve encountered on the way here.

  • You don’t need to have signed up for StB or the Treasure Hunt game to participate in those activities! We just won’t be randomly pairing you off.
    • For Spin the Bottle, just hit other people’s comments (so long as they list themselves as being open to more) or post your own ‘Open’ comment.
    • For the Treasure Hunt game, you will need to find someone who will pair with you for the event!
  • When it comes to spin the bottle and other kissing games, no one is obligated to do anything they don’t want to do. You don’t have to smooch just because you were matched up! Play what you enjoy! If your character is more likely to stare awkwardly or reject any potential suitors, go ahead and do that.
locations! BEFORE THE PARTY: All day the air's been buzzing with excitement. Party-goers were advised that this would be a swimwear friendly party, so what'd you put on? Did you and your friends get together to coordinate outfits? Did you almost beef it on your way down here? This header is a great spot for quick pre-party group threads with house/year mates, dorms or friend groups.

ON THE BANKS: Logs and lawn chairs are pulled up to a crackling bonfire where students can gather to chat, snack and roast some s’mores. Nearby, bottled drinks have been arranged in two wheelbarrows flanking either side of a table of snacks and s’more supplies. Everything is clearly labeled for your convenience! Off and on throughout the night, Oliver Goodliffe serves as chipper bartender, serving up mixed drinks and mocktails to order. It’s the perfect place to enjoy Mary Grace’s perfectly curated nearly perfect playlist of country, rap, and pop, guaranteed to give nearby baby boomers a headache. Except for that Bob Dylan song that snuck in there somehow.

ON THE WATER: A variety of colorful rafts and inner tubes sit near the edge of the riverbank and a few old row boats float just offshore. One of them has been draped with blankets, making it into something of a tent for those seeking privacy. More of those great big magical fireflies drift lazily in the air above the water, ensuring everything glows at least a little. Feel free to grab a raft and splash on in—the water’s fine! There’s absolutely something out there with you, but whatever it is seems mostly interested in keeping students from wandering too far off shore in the dark and ensuring those participating in the Treasure Hunt game make it back safely. Back on land, the soggiest students can find a stack of festive beach towels waiting for them. More than one of them is emblazoned with the face of a some NASBROOM racer you’ve never heard of.

BOAT! HUNT!: Teams of two head out two at a time in row boats to search for 'treasure' marked by a glowing float in the water. Each team has seven minutes to get the job done, and if they fail to find and capture a float, their boat is capsized by The Thing In The River and they are carried safely to shore by their new river monster friend. Post your game threads here!

KISSING GAMES: A cluster of magical faux fireflies hangs low over a circle of large rocks, logs and lawn chairs, perfect for popping a squat. At the center of this arrangement is a flat sheet of cardboard and an old empty wine bottle. Welcome to the kissing circle! Here Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven are played (so post your smooch headers here). A few paces off, the remains of an old cement-walled utility closet stand. The metal door’s been replaced with a piece of plywood, but most of the spiderwebs were cleared out before the party! It only looks a little like a creepy set piece from a horror movie. But that just makes Seven Minutes in Heaven more romantic...right?

EDGE OF THE PARTY: You can still hear the bumping beats of Old Town Road over on the outskirts, but it's a little more secluded and a lot quieter. Grab a drink and a beach towel and set up shop on a big rock or in the shade of the scrubby brush lining the banks. It's the perfect place for private conversations, or just taking a break from the party people.

END OF THE NIGHT: It's 10PM. You can't stay here and also you have to go home! No one wants to get in trouble!! Organizers from Wildgulch stick around a little late to get everyone on their way back to their dorm on time. Use this space for any late night, post party threads.

Merlin may not be giving Tony the silent treatment, but he is only half-listening to the other boy now as he peers into the bottom of the boat and silently wills his eyes to adjust more completely to the dark. No luck, unfortunately. "Stop rowing," he replies instead and does so himself. That his partner might want an explanation for this hasn't occurred to him just yet; he doesn't give one.

"Already?" Tony questions but immediately obeys, lifting his oars out of the water. After all, he is only first mate. "I figured this would be tougher. Try hard that Mary Grace is, and all." He seems to be unaware that his partner in treasure hunting is no longer really listening to him.

Typically, this assessment of Mary Grace would've earned a laugh from Merlin but he's still focused on the shape in the bottom of the boat, which finally becomes visible as their vessel shifts under the moonlight. It's a small brown field mouse and it looks more than a little shaken up to be out on the water. He pulls in his own oars and slips his sleeves down over his hands (not a difficult task considering that almost all of his shirts are a smidge too big), finally registering what the other boy's said.

"Everything's just noise with her," he returns and gestures toward the mouse without looking around or noticing the glowing purple float, "Something'll turn up soon. But we've got a stowaway to deal with first..." For the moment, at least, his competitive vigor has been undercut by the unexpected company. Animals have a tendency to soften his sharper edges.
